Hermes Kriophoros;
Gods as old as Hermes have many Epithets through time and cultures, but I like to focus on the deeper, older and mysterious ones.
Kriophoros meaning “Ram bearer” is often depicted as a young Hermes carrying a ram over his shoulder. When we think of Hermes in modern culture we think of him as the “messenger of the gods” but that’s only one of his jobs. Hermes was a god of way finding. If you were traveling you would reach out to Hermes for protection and direction. Trade routes would offer safety from the wilderness but attract thieves and criminals alike. Everything moved through these roads; livestock, food, fine goods, news, gossip & more. Hermes markers called Hermae would guide the way, mark property boundaries and even served as small altars to the god for those in need.
Hermes, born a trickster god, very quickly took on a role of protection, pathfinding and prosperity for travelers. When his guidance wasn’t needed in the physical realm he became a psycho-pomp for spirits of loved ones, people would pray that he help their relatives find the afterlife safely.
If you find yourself lost, Hermes carries a beacon of hope and a hand to hold as you find your path again.
