Dionysus Zagreus Print
Gods as old as Dionysus have many Epithets through time and cultures, but I like to focus on the deeper, older and mysterious ones.
Dionysus meaning “Zeus of Nysa” was thought to be the rightful heir of Zeus. Zagreus meaning “twice born” was born into a power struggle that led those around him to tear him apart at his very birth. This myth could reflect the clashing of real world cultures and the struggle for social power and worship. Once he was pieced back together, (similarly to Osiris,) Dionysus became a god of the earth. Associated with the bulls used to till the soil and the bountiful harvest. The locals thanked him for the abundant grapes which like him were torn apart and forged into something greater; wine. A drink that could ease the pain of illness as much as create violent madness in the hearts of men. His associations with the earth, wilderness and madness often gets him lumped in with Pan and Bacchus but his story is distinctly one of triumph and transformation. A reminder that though our loved ones can be our undoing, it is never too late to pick up the pieces and move forward with your head held high.
