Imaginary friends come in all shapes and sizes. They play wonderful games and bring smiles to many faces. Every family has them, every generation brings new games. But when mine came in through the window with a too-wide grin, moving a little too stiffly and sporting my face I couldn’t help but be nervous. “Don’t be afraid” she cooed in my voice.
We played for a few minutes before I realized it was probably time for dinner. As I got up from the tub to take my towel she mentioned the banquet her family would be serving, just over the hill. My mouth watered at all the delicious treats; she already knew what I liked.
But I sighed as I dried off and mentioned my Mother would worry. Suddenly the bathroom door flung open, Mother threw herself on top of me sobbing and as I glanced over her shoulder my new friend was gone. “You’ve been gone for a week! Where have you been?” I blinked, surely it had only been a few moments…
To this day I remember her too-wide grin on a fuzzy face that I swore was much like mine…
